There's something liberating about not pretending. Dare to embarrass yourself. Risk.

- Drew Barrymore

I proved my dorkiness this month by devoting nearly the entire month of December to 600+ pages about the building of the Brooklyn Bridge.  The Great Bridge by David McCullough was a great read though.  This man has a talent of making history read like a novel, and even with a topic that got very technical at times, I really enjoyed the book.

At least I can say I'm not the only dorky in the DC metro area because on the train one morning, a guy sat in front of me and noticed what I was reading... and, couldn't help himself but share with me he was reading the same book!  We were within 20 pages of each other, lol... who would have thought.

To follow up a book taking place in New York in the 1870's, I picked up one that took place in New York in the 1900's.  Crystal and I agreed to read House of Mirth by Edith Wharton together a few years ago. I got the book and tried to get into it more than once without luck... but, as usual, it's amazing what I can get into when forced to read on while stuck on a train.  And, I really got into this one... finishing it at home even.  The story of Lily Bart, a member of Society who falls out of favor when her money runs short and her "friends" sacrifice her to their own needs is a tragedy for sure.  I felt badly for her at the same time I wanted her to just give in, say f' em, throw her pride aside, and do what would get her ahead... In the end, I wasn't sure if I was proud of her or not.

This is my last book of the year and is number 38.  Amazing. I am reminded that one of my goals for 2011 was to read one book a month... I guess a too-long commute will blow that goal out of the water :)  It's the only good thing about said commute!
