For three-plus years, I've checked in on Jackson before I go to bed - as morbid as it sounds - to hear him breathing. For a while, I'd noticed that he would stop for what always seemed a bit too long and then kick-start back up. Sleep apnea in a 3-year-old?
In addition to this, there had been times when he sounded like a frog, with something obviously wrong with his throat. We'd ask if he felt badly, if his throat hurt, and thankfully he never answered that it did; however, when we'd look, the glands in the back of his throat would be so swollen, they'd nearly be touching.
So, bring on strep throat in late April, where all this gets discussed with the doctor and we find ourselves at an ENT talking about getting his tonsils and adenoids taken out. Whew.
Jackson had surgery the Wednesday before Memorial Day weekend (May 26). The procedure went smoothly, thankfully, and I was able to get past the fact they were putting him under. After the surgery, it took him some time to come out from under the anesthesia... he was upset and crying and wouldn't drink or eat his popcicle. We took him home and he slept.
The next two weeks were rough. He was in severe pain, to the point he refused to eat or drink, which scared us to death the first day or so. He refuses all medicine (tylenol, bubble gum peniclin), so we finally had to force the pain medicine down... this involved both of us, holding him down, and slowly squeezing the medicine in his mouth via syringe. It took him a full two weeks to get back to normal... and, he sounds different, which makes me sad. But, he's back to himself otherwise.
Just a few pictures to document how badly he felt during recovery:
