Monday, October 3 was packing day. We're very fortunate in that my relocation benefits provides that movers pack everything up for us and load it to the truck. Without this benefit, it would have to be a REALLY good job to move for!
Sunday night was the last night in the house and Monday morning felt kind of normal... we got up, the kids got ready for school, we had breakfast, and I took them in. But, once I got back to the house, the movers were already there and chaos began.
We were not completely ready for them, and I was running around trying to get our no-pack pile set up and find the last minute items we needed to bring with us for temporary housing. But, after we got our stuff together, the rest of the day ended up being pretty boring. It's a bit strange and uncomfortable sitting around watching while other people work to pack up you crap. A definite highlight of the day was that Isabelle, my friend from work, came over for lunch. It was good to see her and say a somewhat delayed "so long."
After the guys packed up everything, we ran to pick up the kids, check into our hotel, then headed out to Buffalo Wild Wings for our last hurrah (see next post).
Tuesday morning, we took the kids to school for their last day, and headed back to the house for the guys to load everything up. They were there by the time we got there and got right to work. All of our stuff was loaded on the truck by 2 p.m. The rest of the afternoon was spent doing some last minute running around. We picked up the kids, said some more goodbyes, and headed to the hotel. Auntie Jamee and Trey came over for pizza in the lobby and for another last goodbye.
Wednesday morning, we got up and had to head to the house for our last walk-thru and to pick up the van, which was loaded to the gills with our crap. We let the kids come in to see it empty - hoping to give them a bit better understanding as to what was going on. When we walked into the kitchen, both of them were just taken aback... but, then they thought it was awesome to be able to run around the entire downstairs like crazy people.
We loaded up and then hit the road. We drove separate, with Jon in the van and me with the kiddos in my car... and, for the most part, the drive went well. For the night, we stopped in Wythesville, Virginia. We got a bit lost looking for the Hampton Inn and got to drive around some... what a goregous little town! We ate at a really cool restaurant that evening, too, though I was the only one who liked the food. It was the Log House 1776... old and super cool!

Thursday's drive went even a bit more smoothly than Wednesday... and, it was just beautiful driving through the mountains. Okay, we didn't get to see this exactly, but it was pretty just the same... and, this is what it will look like in a few weeks. The autumn color was a bit more spotty on our drive :)

Finally, we made it to our apartment around 3 p.m. or so. We met up with Toby for dinner our very first night :)
We're staying in Fairfax, Virginia, at an apartment complex called The Reserve at Fairfax. This is what they look like.

I had thought I had reserved an apartment right next to the Vienna Metro Station, but it turns out that was a misunderstanding... so, come Tuesday for my first day of work, I'll be figuring out a bus ride to the metro. The station is only 6 miles away, so it's not too bad... but, I'm missing the metro and the tot lot I thought this place had.
So, these few days went super quickly and seemed super hectic... but, we made it.
