There's something liberating about not pretending. Dare to embarrass yourself. Risk.

Oh my... Jackson is 5!

This year, we were fortunate enough to celebrate Jackson's birthday on a Sunday, which meant we could have his party on his birthday - a real treat. After much deliberation, I was able to convince him that an Angry Birds birthday party would be way cooler than a superhero party... so, that's what we did!

The week before, I took Jack with me to a local bakery to order his cake. Unfortunately, because angry birds is a fairly recent phenomenon, the grocery stores did not have it as a cake decorating option... so, we had to go high tech. At the bakery, we had the option of going ridiculously expensive with handmade fondant decorations, or choose an image they could "print" on the cake... guess what we chose!? While not exactly what Jack had in mind, he was able to pick out the picture he wanted for his cake.

On the day of, we got up early and headed to Chuck E. Cheese's. We didn't book a formal party with them, but instead just met up with our friends and played games. Thankfully, CEC has your back and you can buy the birthday crown separately... since Jackson had been specifically asking for this crown, it was a relief to me to be able to swing it.

After CEC, everyone made their way back to our house for pizza and cake for lunch. The kiddos played and we opened presents. Jackson was so excited by his gifts that when he was done, he tried to "open" the wrapping paper tube! We had to tell him about 3 times that it wasn't a gift, lol.

It was a fairly low-key affair, but we were thankful to have some friends come over to help us celebrate... and, I think Jackson had a great time.
