There's something liberating about not pretending. Dare to embarrass yourself. Risk.

Holy moly was I wrong about the walking thing. A couple of weeks ago we saw Jack's first shuffly steps but, I thought for sure it would be a while before he really got going.. but, that's not the case. This past week, we've had a number of times where he got up and really going... five, six steps at a time. He going to be a fully functioning bi-ped in no time!

Other than that, we're really increasing the table food, too. This morning, at Cracker Barrel, Jack ate nearly a hole buscuit and a good chunk of mashed potatoes. We have discovered he LOVES bread... toast, muffins, buscuits and the like are definitely favorites. He fills his face until it's full, then gives us a big, cheesey grin.

Other than, that, he's growing out of his clothes.. 6 months are long gone and even some of his 9 month stuff is getting snug. He's wearing more and more 12 months!

Oh, and lastly, this weekend, we began planning for Jack's first birthday party. It's pretty much open to anyone willing to make the trip and we're hoping tons of folks use it as an excuse to come visit and meet him if you haven't already. The party will be Saturday, May 3.

Alright, this is what the email said:

Your New Baby

You may begin to think your baby has grown into a monkey as he starts to crawl, wiggle, and climb out of his crib, stroller, and highchair. Diaper changes will also become even more challenging because, honestly, who wants to lay there for a whole minute when there's exploring to do? Just be sure to move heavy, hot or otherwise dangerous objects at least 12 inches away from table and counter edges so they're safely out of reach of Jackson Edward's curious hands.

This new, adventurous behavior may end in a few accidents, but try not to overreact each time he takes a tumble. Wait to see how he feels and whether or not he's hurt. Sometimes you can say, "Oops, you fell down," give him a kiss and he may continue playing or attempt to fall again so he can get another kiss from you. Just be sure that if he is hurt, you provide appropriate medical attention right away.

Jackson Edward may start taking short walks while holding onto your hand. he now understands what to do when you are dressing him and will stick out his arms and legs to help you. He may also be able to drink from a cup all by himself - although some babies may not do this for a few more months.

It's never too early to begin teaching Jackson Edward manners. Remember that he learns by mirroring you, so get in the habit (if you're not already) of saying "please" and "thank you." Starting early, being consistent, and using these words yourself will help Jackson Edward incorporate them into his vocabulary.

Here's what it said about table food:

As Jackson Edward learns to eat more solid foods, be careful what you give him. Because Jackson Edward's immune system is not fully developed, he shouldn't be given the following foods until after his first birthday:

Honey - Honey may contain botulism spores, which an adult's immune system can handle, but may be toxic to a baby. Honey is fine if it is baked in foods.

Salt - Large quantities of salt or soy sauce can result in salt poisoning or seizures.

Wheat or wheat products - Wheat is the most common grain allergen. Most babies can handle wheat (cereal, breads) when they're about 6 to 8 months old, but if you're worried about allergies, it's not a bad idea to wait until after his first birthday.

Peanuts and peanut butter - Peanuts are highly allergic (and also a choking hazard). If you or Jackson Edward's father has a peanut allergy, wait until Jackson Edward is at least 3 before giving him peanuts or peanut butter. The same is true for tree nuts such as pecans or walnuts.

Cows' milk - Stick with breast milk or formula until after Jackson Edward's first birthday. His body can't digest the protein in cows' milk, it doesn't have all the nutrients he needs, and it contains minerals in amounts that can damage his kidneys.

Shellfish - As with peanuts, shellfish is highly allergenic. If you or Jackson Edward's father is allergic to shellfish, wait until Jackson Edward is 3 or 4 before introducing shellfish.

Eggs - Cooked egg yolks are fine, but wait until Jackson Edward is one year old before you give him egg whites, which may cause an allergic reaction.
